Claudia González-Márquez is a Teaching and Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence, Data, and the Rule of Law. Claudia lectures at the Edinburgh Futures Institute as part of the interdisciplinary MSc in Data and Artificial Intelligence programme, and is course organiser for ‘Data and Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Law and Governance’.

Claudia’s main research focus lies at the intersection of neurotechnology, artificial intelligence and law. Claudia’s doctoral work investigated the legal implications of security vulnerabilities in brain-computer interfaces, with particular emphasis on assessing the adequacy of current legal frameworks to address the risks and harms posed by AI-powered neurotechnologies.

González-Márquez’s current research addresses the governance implications of artificial intelligence built on brain data, with a focus on the legal and regulatory challenges posed by foundation models trained on large-scale recordings of neural activity. As part of this agenda, one strand of this work investigates the legal status and evidentiary use of AI-generated brain data in court proceedings. Claudia’s broader research interests include technology law, neuroethics, emerging technologies, AI ethics and data privacy.

Claudia holds an LLB Hons (Summa Cum Laude) from the Monterrey Institute of Technology, an LLM from the University of Edinburgh and is a Law PhD Candidate (awaiting defense). During their doctoral studies, Claudia served as Outreach Coordinator at the International Neuroethics Society, Postgraduate Teaching Assistant at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, Managing Editor of SCRIPTed Journal of Law, Technology and Society. Claudia has also contributed to interdisciplinary teaching at Edinburgh Law School, including the undergraduate LLB course ‘Neuroscience and the Law’, and is an affiliate of the Centre for Technomoral Futures.

Beyond academia, Claudia is a Certified Information Privacy Professional and provides strategic legal consulting services to technology startups, building on their prior experience in law firm and in-house roles.
