On Monday 16th May, a British Academy funded workshop on land reform in southern Africa was held at the University of Edinburgh. The joint programme was provided by Edinburgh Law School and the Centre of African Studies.
Professor Anne Griffiths, Professor of Anthropology of Law, provided the Welcome address and was followed by Professor Elisa Morgera, who introduced delegates to the BENELEX research project.
Law school based postgraduate researchers Elsa Tsioumani and Margherita Brunori provided a panel on "Opportunities and Challenges for Realizing Justice in relation to Land through International Law".
An afternoon panel featured contributions from Professor Chijere Wiseman (University of Malawi), Professor Julie Stewart (University of Zimbabwe) and Professor Faustin Kalabamu (University of Botswana).
This was the second in a series of workshops, research and training modules, funded by the British Academy's International Partnership and Mobility Scheme to be conducted in Botswana, Edinburgh, Malawi and Zimbabwe. These workshops have been designed to address the critical issue of access to land and land reform in Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.
