Consultation response urges caution on use of cameras and live-text based communications in Scottish Courts

Fri 7 February 2014

Which Scottish Sheriff is most likely to get a breakthrough in Hollywood? If some members of the legal profession have raised their hopes high, they may have to wait a bit longer.

Burkhard Schafer and Michael Bromby authored on behalf of BILETA a submission to the Consultation on Cameras and live text-based communication in the Scottish courts which urges a cautious approach while endorsing in principle the ideal of open justice that such a move aims to serve.

The review of this subject was announced by Lord President Gill in October 2012. It has been more than 20 years since Lord President Hope issued guidance on the subject to consider requests for filming in Scottish courts.  The Review Group who issues the call for consultation is chaired is by Lady Dorrian.
