Who can apply?
Shepherd and Wedderburn's legal summer placements are open to the following students:
Scotland:
- Third-year (or above) Scots Law LLB students
- First-year (or above) Accelerated LLB students
London:
- Second-year (or above) English LLB students

What does it involve?
This is a paid placement, consisting of a three-week placement in a single legal team (see list of departments [external site] as examples), either in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen or London.
A summer placement is an excellent way to experience the reality of life in a commercial law practice and you could potentially get fast-tracked entry into Shepherd and Wedderburn's graduate recruitment process. You can expect workshops, and training and networking opportunities with other students and legal professionals.
The work that a summer student may be involved in can include conducting legal/primary research, looking up case law and developing appropriate briefing notes, accompanying lawyers to client meetings and taking minutes of the meeting for future reference, correspondence work, court running, precognitions, drafting and preparing presentations.
2025 summer placement applications are now open. You can find out more and apply the link below.

Shepherd and Wedderburn's two-year traineeship offers a structured approach to training with four six-month seats covering at least three different legal disciplines. Not only will this help you decide the area in which you wish to specialise but it will also keep life interesting. Traineeships are available in the Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and London offices.
From day one, Shepherd and Wedderburn expect you to become a fully-fledged member of the team, working on real legal projects, meeting clients and getting to grips with the way they do business.
As a trainee, you will be mentored by a senior member of the team, who will offer help and encouragement and suggest new opportunities to explore.
2023 legal placement applications are now closed, but details of future legal placements will be added shortly.
