Activities for students staying in Edinburgh

Although the Law School is closed for winter break, there is still plenty to get involved in locally. We know that many of our students will be staying on-campus over the festive season and wanted to share some suggestions of things to do in the city, as well as details about where to reach out for support throughout the holiday.

Whether it's a socially distanced catch-up with a member of staff or one of our alumni, joining a virtual event or looking for nearby activities - our students can access a range of ideas, support resources and emergency contacts on the University’s Sharepoint feature.

Staggered return to on-campus teaching

The Scottish Government recently announced their plans for bringing students back to Scotland safely in the New Year. As part of the UK-wide approach to restricting the flow of people across the country in the crucial early period of 2021, the University of Edinburgh will be implementing a staggered return to on-campus teaching for undergraduate students.

  • Teaching for Undergraduates

All teaching will commence for all cohorts the w/b 11th January, however the start of on-campus, in-person teaching for undergraduate students will be phased over a six week period. Undergraduates who travelled to other parts of the UK for the winter vacation are strongly encouraged not to return to Edinburgh until their on-campus teaching commences.

Once on-campus teaching recommences for undergraduates, it will continue in the hybrid fashion for the remainder of semester 2.

  • PGT/ PGR students

This phased approach to on-campus teaching does not include PGT teaching on campus or PGR research on campus. On-campus teaching for PGT students will start in the first week of semester (w/c 11 January), without change to current plans. If PGT and PGR students are planning to return to campus for semester 2, they should do so as per their current class timetable or research plan.

Any students who are travelling internationally should ensure that they include the required period of quarantine into their plans when returning for on-campus study.

Students are reminded to please check their University email ahead of their return to campus for any individual updates and communications.

Please also refer to the University's Information about Semester 2 page for the latest information and guidance about our Semester Two plans, returning to Edinburgh in January and accessing support.

Asymptomatic testing in Semester 2

To support the safe return of our students after the winter break, the University of Edinburgh will be offering asymptomatic Covid-19 testing from Thursday 7 January – Friday 12 February 2021.

Testing will be available at the Pleasance Sport Complex and Gym. We strongly encourage students to book a test if returning to Edinburgh from another part of the UK. This will reduce the risk of you passing Covid-19 onto others on return to Edinburgh.

A test should be booked as close to the return date as possible - please remember that two separate bookings should be made. Undergraduate students should book their tests to coincide with the date of return to term time accommodation.

'How-to' online information sessions

The University’s online 'How-to' information sessions are a great way to prepare to get started in the New Year.

With practical information shared from a variety of professional support services, these practical live 'bite-size' online sessions will provide students with a reminder of how to access support and gain more advice on 'how-to' make the most of Semester 2.
