Dr Claudia González-Márquez is a Teaching and Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence, Data, and the Rule of Law at Edinburgh Law School. Claudia lectures across honours IT law courses and the Edinburgh Futures Institute’s interdisciplinary MSc in Data and Artificial Intelligence, and is Course Organiser for ‘Data and Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Law and Governance’.
Claudia’s research sits at the intersection of law, artificial intelligence and neurotechnology, with a particular focus on how AI-enabled systems generate novel liability and accountability issues and evidentiary challenges. Claudia’s doctoral work investigated the legal implications of security vulnerabilities and malicious interference with neurotechnology systems as a case study for AI-enabled misuse, assessing the adequacy of UK–EU legal frameworks across tort, criminal, cybercrime and data protection law.
Dr González-Márquez’s current research explores the governance implications of artificial intelligence built on brain data, including the legal status and evidentiary use of AI-mediated neural data and the conditions needed to preserve contestability, reliability, and due process. Claudia is affiliated with the Centre for Technomoral Futures, and has held roles including Managing Editor of SCRIPTed Journal of Law, Technology and Society, and Outreach Coordinator at the International Neuroethics Society.
Claudia holds an LLB Hons (Summa Cum Laude) from the Monterrey Institute of Technology, a Master of Laws (LLM) and a PhD in Law from the University of Edinburgh. Broader research interests include AI governance, cybercrime, AI ethics, data privacy, and emerging technology governance.
Beyond academia, Dr González-Márquez is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/E) and advises technology startups on AI governance and data protection, drawing on prior experience in both in-house roles and global leading law firms such as Baker McKenzie.
