Professor Schafer gives keynote speech at Internet Summit Austria
Tue 1 October 2019
Professor Burkhard Schafer, Director of the SCRIPT Centre and Co-I of the Creative Informatics Project, delivered the keynote speech at the Internet Summit Austria, the annual conference of the Internet Service Providers Austria, which took place in Vienna.
In his talk about the future of the legal profession in an age of intelligent technologies, titled '2 Scotsmen in a lift: Language recognition, inclusive design and AI in the justice system', Prof Schafer discussed how translation and translation science shaped the emergence of modern legal systems. Noting the contribution of the Scottish princess and Austrian duchess Eleonore on legal German, and how computer assisted translation could bring changes to our understanding of the connection between national language and national laws that are as radical as those experienced during her time in the Renaissance, the talk focused on the ethical and legal challenges of this revolution, from protection of minority languages to issues of access to justice.
