Professor Burkhard Schafer, Professor of Computational Legal Theory, has been appointed to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) advisory board.
The AHRC advisory board provides expert support and advice which reflects the arts and humanities research communities’ perspectives on the needs and challenges facing research, innovation and practice. It supports the development of strategic partnerships that facilitate opportunities for the delivery of the AHRC’s vision and its role in the wider context of UK research and Innovation.
Professor Schafer said: “I’m extremely honoured to be part of this important group. We only have to look at the news to see the crucial importance a strong and independent arts and humanities sector has for the nation’s wellbeing. And how precarious it can be. The AHRC is crucial as champion and guardian of this independence. A key question for me personally will be how to deepen and improve the collaboration across councils. Based on my experience as a Co-Investigator with DECaDe, TAS and Creative Informatics, a humanities perspective can add real value to projects with a strong technology focus. There are many success stories we can and should shout about loudly, as equal and open-minded partners in strategic research collaborations that address some of the most pressing issues of our times."
The AHRC funds world-class, independent research in subjects from philosophy and the creative industries, to art conservation and product design. AHRC research aims to address some of society’s biggest challenges, such as tackling modern slavery, exploring the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, and understanding what it is to be human.
