Prof Niamh Nic Shuibhne

As part of a join University of Edinburgh – KU Leuven PhD Studentship programme in European Studies, projects on the topic of 'Law and the European Union Internal Market' can expect to receive co-supervision from Prof Niamh Nic Shuibhne of Edinburgh Law School, alongside Prof Wouter Devroe of KU Leuven.

The University of Edinburgh is offering studentships for PhD applicants in the field of European Studies for September 2021 entry.

The PhD project must relate to one of three topics specified for the programme. Each topic is co-supervised by expert academics in that field, one from the University of Edinburgh and one from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Niamh Nic Shuibhne is Professor of European Union Law. She is offering her co-supervision for PhD projects in Law and the European Union Internal Market. Her involvement in this new joint EDI/KUL programme is linked to her research interests where she examines questions of substantive EU law from a constitutional perspective, with a particular focus on principle-based analysis of free movement law and European Union citizenship. Themes that underpin that work include the values of coherence, fairness and integrity; the respective commitments, and responsibilities, of the Union and of the Member States; and the quality of EU legal decision-making, with particular emphasis on the role of the judiciary.

A maximum of three awards will be offered as part of the studentship programme.  The successful applicant will be awarded a 4-year studentship, which includes full tuition fees, a stipend and provision of research costs. The studentship will be awarded competitively and is open to UK, EU and overseas students applying to start their PhD programme of study in 2021-22.

The deadline for applications is 15 March 2021. The deadline for both references to be received by the College is 17 March 2021.
