Prof Hector MacQueen reappointed to the Scottish Law Commission
Thu 7 August 2014
Prof MacQueen was first appointed as a full-time Commissioner in September 2009. Since his appointment to the Scottish Law Commission, Hector has led projects including a large-scale review of the Scots law of contract in light of the European Draft Common Frame of Reference. The recommendations of the most recent report of that project, on Formation of Contract: Execution in Counterpart, are now being taken forward in the Scottish Parliament as the Legal Writings (Counterparts and Delivery) (Scotland) Bill.
Prof MacQueen also leads the Commission’s engagement with a joint project with the Law Commission for England and Wales on aspects of Insurance Law. The most recent report in that project is the joint Report on Insurance Contract Law: Business Disclosure; Warranties; Insurers’ Remedies for Fraudulent Claims; and Late Payment. An Insurance Bill based on the recommendations is that Report has been introduced in the UK Parliament.
Prof MacQueen will now continue in his appointment as Commissioner until September 2017.
The Scottish Law Commission, along with its counterpart for England and Wales, was set up by the Law Commissions Act 1965. It exists to keep the law of Scotland under review with a view to its modernisation, simplification and systematic reform. The Commission receives and considers proposals for changes to the law, examines particular branches of the law, and makes recommendations for reform.
