Wed 13 November 2024

Professor Veronica Ruiz Abou-Nigm, Chair of Private International Law and Dr Antonia Sommerfeld from the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law are the winners of the José María Cervelló Business Law Prize.
Their prize-winning paper, ‘Circular Fashion and Legal Design: Weaving Circular Economy Threads into International Contracts, ’ explores the circular economy in international supply chains. It investigates private international law to show why a holistic, circular notion of the law of contracts is required in the supply chain to create the legal framework for the transition to a circular economy.
Professor Ruiz Abou-Nigm: “We are deeply honoured to receive the XVIII José María Cervelló Prize. This award affirms the value of pioneering work in private international law and sustainability in the fashion industry, and it inspires us to continue pushing boundaries of interdisciplinary research in pursuit of new insights. We are immensely grateful for the support of our colleagues at Edinburgh Law School and at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg who are supporting us in this journey.”
This year was the 18th annual award of the José María Cervelló Business Law Prize, which is sponsored by IE Law School and ONTIER and dedicated to promoting legal study and research. This year’s competition focused on examining the challenges and issues in sustainability in fashion law and the international legal space.
The ceremony took place on 7 November in the Aula Magna of the IE University and was attended by Soledad Atienza, Dean of IE Law School; Pilar Galeote, Professor at IE Law School and Director of the Cervelló Chair; Adolfo Menéndez, co-chair of the Cervelló Chair; Pedro Rodero, Executive Chairman of ONTIER; and Ana Belén Campuzano, Professor of Commercial Law at Universidad San Pablo CEU and Chair of the award jury.
