PeaceRep researcher Laura Wise has had her research cited in the UN Secretary General’s annual report on the women, peace, and security agenda. The report highlights a lack of progress over the past decade and the continued stagnation of women’s participation in peace processes.

The report cites PeaceRep’s research showing that none of the peace agreements reached in 2023 included a women’s group or representatives as signatories. Of the agreements reached, only 26% included specific references to women, girls, gender, or sexual violence, a drop of 2% from the previous year. It also refers to PeaceRep’s findings that despite the worldwide rise in conflicts, there has not been a similar rise in peace agreements.

The report was delivered by António Guterres to the Security Council’s annual open debate on women, peace, and security in October. The discussion this year focussed on advancing women, peace and security amidst global instability. The annual debate is part of the Security Council’s aim to have a greater inclusion of women in the peace process.
