P5 Legal Advisers to take part in discussion with academic audience at Edinburgh Law School

Wed 22 May 2019

On Friday 7th June 2019, a panel of five distinguished Legal Advisers to the Foreign Ministries of China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US will take part in a question-and-answer session at Old College.

The event, which is intended to provide a forum for the academic and student community to engage with the advisers on topics of contemporary concern and interest in international law, is also open to the public, though registration is required. The Q&A follows the annual meeting of the P5 Legal Advisers, which this year will be held at Old College, where the advisers will discuss international legal issues that have arisen over the year.

Participants in the panel include Sir Iain Macleod, Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom; Mr Zagainov Evgeny Timofeevich, Director of the Legal Department of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation; M François Alabrune, Directeur de la direction des affaires juridiques et jurisconsulte du Ministère des affaires étrangères français; Mr Jia, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry of the People’s Republic of China; and the Legal Adviser of the United States Department of State.

On the upcoming event, Professor Andrew Lang said: “The Edinburgh Centre for International and Global Law is delighted to be welcoming the Legal Advisers to the Foreign Ministries of the Permanent Five.

“This event comes at a time when international legal issues are in the news on a daily basis, and it represents a rare opportunity to ask questions of, and hear from, those who are engaged with such issues on a daily basis, and at the very highest level.”
