Tran-Inclusive Culture launch event

Professor Sharon Cowan, Professor of Feminist and Queer Legal Studies at the Law School is one of the academics involved in the creation of the University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries new publication, ‘Trans-Inclusive Culture: Guidance on advancing trans inclusion for museums, galleries, archives and heritage organisations.’

The guidance aims to tackle the growing uncertainty and anxiety surrounding trans-inclusive practices within the cultural sector and sets out a framework to support cultural organisations to advance trans inclusion. It explains key components of UK law as well as some of the limitations and complexities.

Working with legal experts, equality specialists and people with trans lived experience, the guidance contains a series of scenarios which speak to the day to day challenges that those working in heritage, museums, archives and galleries may face. It’s hoped that this will give staff working within the sector the skills, knowledge and confidence to have a positive impact on the experiences of trans individuals and communities.

The guidance is currently supported by 21 organisations who collectively represent and advocate for thousands of museums, galleries, archives, heritage organisations and culture professionals across the UK and internationally.
