New Directorship to lead Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies on its next phase

Sun 1 June 2014

Edinburgh Law School is delighted to announce that Rebecca MacKenzie and Kerry Trewern have been appointed as the new Director and Deputy Director for the Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies. Rebecca, who took up her post as Director in March, tutored in Edinburgh Law School for several years before her appointment as a Senior Teaching Fellow on the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice and Pro-Bono Coordinator of the University’s Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC) in 2011. In her role as FLAC Coordinator, Rebecca has taken the Centre from strength-to-strength, and last year her outstanding work was recognised when she received the Principal’s Medal for Community Service.

Before joining the teaching staff at the University, Rebecca practised for many years as a litigation solicitor in both large and small firms. She also undertook legal work for national and local charities. She appeared regularly in sheriff courts throughout Scotland and represented clients at tribunals and in Court of Session actions. Rebecca is a keen advocate of clinical legal education and continues to be involved in its development  within the Law School.

Kerry trained at Balfour + Manson LLP and qualified as a solicitor in 2005. Following several years in the firm's litigation department, Kerry worked as a professional support lawyer and associate in Morton Fraser’s litigation team. She has also worked at the Scottish Law Commission as a legal assistant and undertaken secondments to the legal teams of both the Scottish Government and Standard Life. As a professional support lawyer, she was heavily involved in trainee training, helping to implement an in-house course for PEAT 2 purposes.

Kerry appeared in court regularly and her main areas of specialism include private client litigation, commercial litigation and professional negligence claims.

Rebecca and Kerry will lead the Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies as it embarks upon a new phase.
