In Memoriam: friend of Edinburgh Law School Charles Smith

Thu 28 January 2016

We are saddened to report the sudden death of our valued friend, Charles Smith.

Edinburgh Law School was sorry to hear of the death of Charles Smith, a partner at Brodies LLP specialising in energy and environmental law. Charles was a key figure in the School’s long collaboration with Brodies for our joint Environmental Law Lecture Series. Dr Navraj Singh Ghaleigh composed the following words in his memory:

"On an annual basis since 1993, colleagues in the School would meet with Charles to discuss possible speakers for the coming year. Charles's advice was eagerly sought to ensure that speakers would engage students, scholars and practitioners equally. With his characteristic thoughtfulness, Charles was always able to steer us to an improved position. At the lectures, and subsequent dinners, Charles cheerfully enjoyed the conversation with our distinguished speakers and his wonderful, sometimes mischievous, sense of humour was often in evidence.

Charles was a gentleman in the finest sense of that word - generous, thoughtful, self-respecting and supportive. He had a concern for others, a rounded view of life, that all the best lawyers have. This no doubt contributed to his commitment to the environment, and to legal education. Charles brought an incisiveness and humanity to Edinburgh’s environmental law debates that cannot be replaced. The Law School community, our staff and students, will miss him dreadfully. Our most sincere condolences to his loved ones."
