Law School Mooting Society visits the UK Supreme Court and Privy Council

Fri 13 June 2014

The Law School's Mooting Society visited the United Kingdom Supreme Court and Privy Council on 20 May this year.

In the morning the students were shown around the Inns of Court by alumnus Mr Peter Webster, Barrister. In the afternoon a tour of the court rooms in the UKSC took in the Privy Council and other court rooms.

After lunch one of the two Scottish judges on the court, Lord Hodge, kindly met with the students and explained some of the work of the court and the case that was being heard that day. Following the meeting with Lord Hodge the students watched the court in action as Mr James Eadie QC presented the UK government's case in R (Kaiyam) v Secretary of State for Justice (http://supremecourt.uk/cases/case_2014_0086.html), which concerned the compatibility of the appellant's imprisonment with the European Convention on Human Rights.
