Lord Reed, alumnus of the Edinburgh Law School, has been appointed the next president of the Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in the UK.
One of two Scottish judges on the bench, Lord Reed has served on the Supreme Court since 2012 and has served as deputy president since last year. He will take on the presidency following the retirement of current president Lady Hale in January.
Lord Reed graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1978 with a First Class Honours LLB and having been awarded the Vans Dunlop Scholarship. As well as his work in the Supreme Court, he has served as an ad hoc judge for the European Court of Human Rights and a non-Permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong.
On the subject of his appointment, Lord Reed said: “As president, I will continue to champion the rule of law, alongside promoting public understanding of the role of the judiciary and maintaining the high regard in which the court is held around the world.”
