Judith Rauhofer discusses the future of the EU data protection reform at event in Berlin

Thu 10 April 2014

Judith Rauhofer spoke at an event "EU Data Protection Reform - Do we need a Plan B?" that took place 31 March 2014 at the European Academy for Freedom of Information and Data Protection in Berlin.

The event included other high profile panelists including Jan Albrecht MEP, the European Parliament's rapporteur for the proposed Data Protection Regulation, Hans-Heinrich Knobloch, a representative of the German Home Office and Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung from the University of Passau. The discussion was chaired by former Federal German Data Protection Commissioner Peter Schaar. Attendees includes representatives from the online and communications industry, government, academia and civil society.

Judith was invited to provide an insight into the British position towards the proposals put forward by the European Commission in January 2012. Although the European Parliament recently adopted a compromise text of the proposal with a convincing majority, discussions in the EU are feared to have stalled, due in part to the concerns raised by both the German and the UK government.

Judith has also been invited as one of three speakers at an event on "The Surveillance Society" in London organised by Centre for Inquiry UK. The event will look at the emerging surveillance society and what can be done about it. This will take place in May and more information about the event can be found here.
