On Tuesday, 30 May, LLM in Human Rights students along with Together (Scottish Alliance for Children's Rights) launched a new report on Child Rights Budgeting (CRB) in Scotland. The report, which Together hailed as an essential part of turning the aspirations of the UNCRC (Scotland) Bill into lived experience for children and young people across Scotland, is the culmination of the work by five Human Rights Clinic students. Alexander Pedersen, Fiona Campbell, Isobel Mintz, Mariam Tavdgiridze and Praise Ladringan, developed the report over three months of intensive research in partnership with Together and supervised by Dr Kasey McCall-Smith.
The comprehensive study explores how children's rights can be effectively integrated into budgetary processes, drawing on international and domestic examples to identify successful legislative and policy approaches. The report offers invaluable insights to help the Scottish Government fulfil its forthcoming obligations under the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill. The group presented the report to members of Scottish Government, the Children and Young Persons Commissioner for Scotland Office, Scottish Womens Aid, the Scottish Improvement Service, among others.
Building upon budgeting principles gathered from a range of human rights and equality budgeting frameworks across the globe, the report's ten recommendations offer a robust framework to support Scotland's compliance with its imminent statutory obligations and to improve children and young people’s experiences of their rights in all settings. The Human Rights Clinic is connected to the Global Justice Academy at Edinburgh Law School and is part of its aim to enable students to deliver real world impact through their research
