Kasey Mccall-Smith

Dr Kasey McCall-Smith and Dr Jeremy Knox have been announced as new Global Justice Academy Fellows.

Dr McCall-Smith is the programme director for the LLM in Human Rights at the Edinburgh Law School and Chair of the Association of Human Rights Institutes on behalf of the GJA. As a Global Academy Fellow, she will work across the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences to develop an interdisciplinary introductory online course on human rights, in order to give students a baseline level of knowledge about human rights impacts that will help them with decision-making in their future careers. This has been informed by her recent work on the use of torture by the CIA in the post 9/11 landscape. Dr McCall-Smith’s work centres primarily on the incorporation, implementation, and interpretation of international law in national legal systems, with a specific focus on the UN human rights treaties.

Dr Jeremy Knox  lecturer in Digital Education at Moray House School of Education, and who co-directs the Centre for Research in Digital Education  will work to build awareness of the social and ethical implications of the increasingly ‘datafied’ University of Edinburgh through interdisciplinary discussion. By bringing together expertise from the Global Justice Academy and Edinburgh Futures Institute with ideas related to ethics and justice, Dr Knox will aim to enrich our understanding of the data-driven society and the role of the educational institution within it.

The Global Justice Academy is an interdisciplinary network that supports research, teaching and knowledge exchange on global justice issues, providing a hub for the exploration of what global justice is, discussion of ideas for a more just world, and dialogue with those engaged in justice issues locally and globally.
