Global Environment and Climate Change Law LLM programme strengthens alumni network

Thu 4 December 2014

Dr. Apolline Roger, acting director of the LLM programme in Global Environment and Climate Change Law for 2013-2014, organised a "Meet Your Alumni" event immediately prior to the 2014 Graduation Ceremony on 25th November.

The event provided an opportunity for 2014 LLM global environment law students - who have quickly distinguished themselves professionally after leaving Edinburgh - to share their experience with current students on the programme.

The 2015 class had the pleasure to meet Cecilia Alvarado, Laurie Van der Burg, Michaela Schwedeler, Miranda Geelhoed and Nurashikin Mohamed Khalit from the 2014 class. Cecilia is now the head of the Climate Department of Gonzalez Calvillo s.c., a leading law firm in Mexico. Laurie just completed an internship at the Momentum for Change Team of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn. Michaela is currently working for Climate Focus, an international consultancy firm in Berlin. Miranda is about to start a new job as a consultant for the environment section of the Netherlands Standardization Institute. Finally, Nurashikin will soon join an international shipping company as in-house lawyer.

Current students and graduates discussed the challenges and lessons learnt in the transition from completing the LLM programme to entering the professional life. They highlighted the characteristics of the LLM in Global Environment and Climate Change Law that make graduates particularly competitive on the international environmental law job market, as well as the variety of international employment opportunities open to graduates from this programme. The event helped to strengthen the network among students and alumni of the programme.
