GCILS Webinar: Justice for Syria? A reflection on developments and challenges

Dr Michelle Burgis-Kasthala will join a roundtable discussion on 'Justice for Syria? A reflection on development and challenges' hosted by the Glasgow Centre for International Law and Security (GCILS). The event will take place online on Wednesday, 11 November 2020 at 3:00pm (GMT).
Event description
This is the fourth event in the GCILS Webinar series, which will focus on justice for Syria. The speakers will reflect on the continuing challenges in providing accountability for crimes committed in Syria. They will also discuss the importance of the first trial of its kind world-wide against two former Syrian state officials, who stand accused of crimes against humanity in a German Court.
The webinar will be chaired by Dr Anni Pues, University of Glasgow, Glasgow Centre for International Law and Security, who will be joined by a panel of expert speakers:
- Dr Anan Alsheikh Haidar, Research fellow at the Institute for International Peace and Security Law at the University of Cologne, Germany and previously lecturer in law at Damascus University and the Syrian Virtual University
- Prof Beth Van Schaack, Leah Kaplan Professor of Human Rights, Stanford Law School and affiliated faculty at the Stanford Center for Human Rights & International Justice, also author of Imagining Justice for Syria (OUP 2020)
- Dr Michelle Burgis-Kasthala, Senior Lecturer in International Law at the University of Edinburgh, author of ‘Entrepreneurial justice: Syria, the Commission for International Justice and Accountability and the renewal of international criminal justice’ (2020) EJIL
The panellists’ roundtable discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
