First students welcomed onto historic Global Law LLB degree

Veronica Ruiz Abou-Nigm

We are excited to welcome the first cohort of students onto the Global Law LLB programme. This programme is the first of its kind in Scotland and one of the biggest innovations in the teaching of law at undergraduate level in Edinburgh Law School's history. It equips students with the skills necessary to tackle complex global challenges such as climate change, peace and conflict, and the regulation of AI.

Our Global Law students will develop a range of legal and non-legal skills which will allow them to succeed in many different careers, such as the legal profession, public service, international organizations, the corporate world and civil society organisations. The programme draws upon Edinburgh Law School’s reputation for teaching law for over 300 years and complements the continued teaching of our popular Scots Law LLB degree.

The Law School has a unique position at the crossroads of common law and civil law, and its unparalleled expertise in global legal issues. These strengths ensure students learn about legal frameworks, structures and problems beyond the boundaries of any particular legal system, focus on solving global legal problems and benefit from a strong focus on interdisciplinary methods.

The programme also gives students the opportunity to expand their global perspectives and networks by taking part in a third year abroad at one of our partner institutions located across six continents.

The Directors of the LLB Global Law programme are Professor Veronica Ruiz Abou-Nigm and Dr Gail Lythgoe. Both are delighted to teach this first cohort and looking forward to following the journeys of these students through the next four years.

Professor Veronica Ruiz Abou-Nigm said: “After so many years dreaming, planning and preparing for this new programme, it is exhilarating for all of us in the Edinburgh Law School community to welcome the first cohort of Global Law students.”

Dr Gail Lythgoe said: “The new programme is an exciting approach to legal education that reflects the realities of global legal practice today. Global law is a dynamic area to study and research, and Edinburgh Law School is one of the best places in the world to do so.”
