Primary school pupils from across Edinburgh went head-to-head in legal challenges at this year's School Tasking Scottish Regional Final — an innovative outreach initiative that teaches young people about the law through tasks inspired by the TV game show Taskmaster.

This year’s Scottish Regional Final saw five Primary 6 teams, from two schools (Pirniehall Primary and Forthview Primary) compete to have the chance to progress to the UK Final in June. The teams faced fun (and messy) challenges including making stop-motion animations about murder at sea, trying to get as much rice from a bottle into a bowl using a colander to find a snail, and disguising biscuits. Team “On Top” from Forthview lived up to their name by winning the day.

The competition was hosted by leading law firm Addleshaw Goddard LLP at their Edinburgh office, and led by Dr Susanna Macdonald-Mulvihill, Early Career Fellow in Private Law and Lindsay Jack, Head of Diversity, Careers and Outreach at the Law Society of Scotland.

Dr Macdonald-Mulvihill said: “School Tasking is a fantastic initiative that Edinburgh Law School is proud to be a part of. Everyone involved, from our student volunteers to the Professors who help to judge the tasks - and the children themselves – gets so much from it. To see the P6s develop their knowledge of all aspects of the law and have fun at the same time is one of the most rewarding parts of working at the Law School”

The programme was originally created by Dr Ali Struthers at the University of Warwick’s Law School and Edinburgh Law School has proudly supported the initiative since its inception in 2022.

School Tasking not only introduces young people to the legal system but also helps to normalise conversations about higher education and legal careers at an early age.

Initiatives like School Tasking highlight our commitment to widening participation and to showing Edinburgh Law School as a welcoming place where everyone has the chance to succeed.
