Edinburgh Law School welcomes Professor Bryan Stevenson to receive honorary doctorate following powerful Ruth Adler Lecture

Tue 16 July 2019

Prof Bryan Stevenson

Professor Bryan Stevenson, founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organisation based in Montgomery, Alabama, and Aronson Family Professor of Criminal Justice at NYU Law, was presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh at the Law School graduation ceremony on the 9th July 2019.

Addressing the graduating students, Prof Stevenson gave a touching speech in which he talked about his relationship with his grandmother, and encouraged the new graduates to pursue justice and positive change.

This followed the previous evening's Ruth Adler Lecture, in which Prof Stevenson discussed the persistent 'injustice quotient' and how justice can be achieved through proximity, changing narratives, and staying hopeful. The lecture proved to be a hugely popular event, with tickets selling out well in advance and a large number of people watching the talk via live stream.

You can read Law PhD Candidate Vivek Bhatt’s reflections on the words of Bryan Stevenson in this guest post for the Global Justice Academy blog.
