Edinburgh Law School ranked among world’s leading law schools in QS 2026
Wed 25 March 2026
We are delighted to share that Edinburgh Law School continues to be ranked among the world’s leading Law Schools. In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 25th March, we are placed 15th in the world, 5th in the UK and 1st in Scotland.
The QS rankings provide a global benchmark for excellence in higher education, drawing on a range of indicators including academic reputation, employer reputation, research strength, and international outlook. Our continued presence among the top law schools worldwide reflects the strength of our teaching, the impact of our research, and the vibrancy of our global community.
Why we’re one of the world’s top law schools
Established in 1707, and situated in the heart of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh Law School has been shaping legal research and education for more than 300 years.
Today, we combine that rich heritage with a forward-looking, global perspective. Our students, staff, and visitors benefit from outstanding facilities, including one of the largest law libraries in Europe and the UK’s most extensive collection of European legal materials.
Beyond the classroom, our community is dynamic and outward-facing. Students can take part in a wide range of societies and mooting opportunities, and gain hands-on experience through initiatives such as the Scottish Tax Clinic and the Free Legal Advice Centre —developing practical skills while making a real difference.
Research impact
Our research continues to shape legal thinking and policy in areas such as climate change, health, human rights, commercial law, AI and technology, influencing debates and decision-making at national and international levels
What it’s like to study with us – in our students’ words
It’s this combination of academic excellence, opportunity and community that defines the Edinburgh experience—but our students say it best.
Sonal who studied the LLM in Intellectual Property Law in 2024-25, reflects on the academic environment and the city itself:
“My decision to choose the University of Edinburgh was based on the fact that I was inspired by the work and research conducted by the professors here and to be taught by such leading experts has been an absolute privilege… As a student, Edinburgh is the best city to be in. You can immerse yourself in study at cosy cafés, aesthetic libraries, or in beautiful parks…And when you're not studying, the city offers endless adventures. You can explore the art galleries, browse the independent bookstores, visit the beaches, climb Arthur's Seat for a view, or simply grab a pizza or ice cream and enjoy the sunset on Calton Hill with your friends!"
Alongside this inspiring academic environment, students highlight the sense of community and global perspective they gain during their studies.
Mofiyinfoluwa who studied the MSc Global Crime, Justice and Security in the academic year 2024-25, says:
“The depth of knowledge of the lecturers, together with the commitment and warmth of the non-academic staff, made every aspect of the experience meaningful. The diversity of my cohort was another highlight; learning alongside students from around the world enriched discussions and expanded my worldview.
“Living in Edinburgh added its own unique charm. The graceful blend of the Old and New Towns, the medieval architecture, the quiet moments spent gazing at the castle, and watching the sun set over Arthur’s Seat all made the city feel truly magical.”
For many, the opportunity to apply learning in real-world contexts is also transformative.
Miguel an LLB graduate in 2023, reflects: “Some of the highlights include being part of the Tax Clinic… It’s won numerous awards, Outstanding Course, Community Impact and to have witnessed all of that is just amazing.
“I feel like I’ve grown in confidence over these last four years, and that’s largely because of the amazing support that we have here as part of the Edinburgh Law School Community. From your friends, or from you lecturers and I feel like that’s what you really need. I can really be myself here at the University. You can’t thrive and succeed and excel unless you’re able to be yourself. And I think that’s what I’ve been able to do because of how supportive this whole community has been.”
