On 11 February 2025, Edinburgh Law School welcomed Professor Claire Kilpatrick, a distinguished professor from the European University Institute, as our third Dean’s Fellow.
Professor Kilpatrick’s interests lie mainly in the law and policy construction of Social Europe, especially the EU’s roles. A focus of her recent work has been EMU and Social Europe with a particular focus on sovereign debt loan arrangements and legal challenges to those arrangements from those within debtor EU states before the Court of Justice and human rights bodies.
During her week at Edinburgh Law School Professor Kilpatrick presented her Dean’s Lecture titled, “Is EU Treaty-making a blind spot for EU legal studies?”, met with students and staff and recorded a podcast episode with Professor Neil Walker and Professor Niamh Nic Shuibhne. During the podcast they discussed Social Europe, the soverign debt crisis and the European Semester.
The Dean’s Fellowship welcomes world-renowned legal scholars from across the globe. During their time at the Law School, Dean's Fellows will engage in various events and discussions of their research with our academic and student community, and deliver a Dean’s Lecture which is open to the university community and the general public.
