Edinburgh Law School alumnus and honorary graduate recognised in King’s 2025 New Year Honours List

Edinburgh Law School alumnus, Gordon McNicoll OBE was honoured as Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and Edinburgh Law School Honorary graduate, Dame Eleanor Sharpston KC DCMG was honoured as Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in His Majesty The King’s New Year Honours 2025 List.
Mr McNicoll OBE graduated from Edinburgh Law School with an LLB in 1982 before graduating with a Diploma in Legal Practice in 1983. Mr McNicoll OBE has spent most of his career working as a government lawyer in a variety of different roles. He was recognised for his public service in Scotland.
Mr McNicoll OBE said: "It came as a complete surprise when I received the letter advising me that I had been nominated for this honour but I am of course delighted to accept it.".
Dame Eleanor Sharpston KC DCMG was awarded an Honorary LLD by Edinburgh Law School in 2017. She is a distinguished and experienced barrister recognised for her outstanding and sustained contribution to law and justice, including in her former role as Advocate General at the European Court of Justice.
