Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law lecture with Deputy First Minister for Scotland Nicola Sturgeon furthers #indyref debate

Tue 17 June 2014

A keynote lecture given yesterday by the Deputy First Minister for Scotland at the Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law, has furthered the debate about Scotland's future following the referendum on 18 September.

During the lecture Ms Sturgeon unveiled a roadmap for a Scottish constitution, should the Scottish public vote "Yes" in September. Speaking about the draft Scottish Independence Bill, Ms Sturgeon said:

"A written constitution can be the foundation on which we can build that better Scotland.

"A written constitution is an important part of a nation's identity - it defines who we are and sets out the values that we hold dear.

"It would be our 'Scottish declaration of independence', founded on the principle that in Scotland, the people are sovereign, not the government or the parliament."

Prof Stephen Tierney, Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law said:

"This was landmark event, setting out the Scottish Government’s vision of what an independent Scotland will look like. I am delighted that the Centre contains to play a central role in facilitating Scotland’s national debate."

The event prompted lively discussion amongst attendees and has subsequently received media coverage on several Scottish and UK news channels including the BBC and the Scotsman.
