Dr Smita Kheria on stage at Culture and Business Scotland Forum

On 3 December, Dr Smita Kheria participated in Culture & Business Scotland’s annual forum at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Over 100 attendees from across Scotland’s cultural and business sectors gathered to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the cultural economy. The forum opened with a keynote address by Angus Robertson MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture. Smita spoke on the panel session on ‘Responsible AI in the Creative Industries’, joining representatives from Creative Scotland, the Scottish Government, and Culture for Climate Scotland, to discuss ways in which the cultural sector can embrace innovation while safeguarding ethics, integrity and sustainability.

Her contribution focused on the relationship between AI systems and intellectual property rights, emphasising that responsible AI development needs the legal framework to ensure creatives are fairly rewarded while supporting innovation. Smita also outlined what responsible AI adoption and usage should entail for businesses in the creative sector, recommending practices that can be adopted to protect and safeguard human creativity.
