Dr Paul Behrens of the Edinburgh Law School has published an article in The Scotsman on the ongoing situation in Ukraine. The article deals with the strong reaction with which the international community has countered the invasion of a sovereign State by Russian forces. It explores the way in which institutions of international law – in particular, the International Criminal Court in The Hague – have already become active in an effort to bring the perpetrators of crimes committed in this context to justice. It concludes with the view that even persons in positions of power may be held accountable for serious violations of international law.
Dr Behrens said: 'The invasion of Ukraine was a clear breach of international law and a violation of the common values of the international community. But the response to these acts has been strong, and if the international community remains united, there is reason to believe that the perpetrators of these acts will not escape international justice.'
