Dr Martin David Kelly elected as convenor at the Society of Legal Scholars
Tue 10 September 2024
Edinburgh Law School’s Dr Martin David Kelly, Lecturer in Legal Theory, has been elected as a Convenor of the Jurisprudence Section of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) at their annual conference last week. Dr Kelly will take over convening the Section, together with Dr Sahar Shah (University of Bristol), for a 3-year term in October of this year (when the SLS Executive ratify the appointment).
The SLS is a learned society for those who teach law at a university or similar institution or those who are otherwise engaged in legal scholarship, and aims to advance legal education and scholarship in the United Kingdom and Ireland (and across the globe).
Dr Kelly said: “I’m delighted to have been elected to this role, together with my colleague Dr Shah, by my peers in the Jurisprudence Section of the SLS. I’m looking forward to organising various events for the Section, and to carrying on the good work of the outgoing Convenors Dr Alex Green (University of York) and Dr Joshua Jowitt (Newcastle University).”
The SLS is the oldest and largest learned society in the field of law. It consists of 28 subject sections which promote the development of the subject area as well as playing an important role in formulating the responses of the society to law reform proposals.
The Jurisprudence section offers the opportunity for members interested in any aspect of legal theory and philosophy to meet and discuss ideas. Recent papers presented by the group range from analytical and normative jurisprudence to theoretical engagement with substantive law.
Dr Kelly is also the Deputy Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Legal Theory and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Justice Academy.
