Dr Lachlan D. Urquhart co-organises Human-Data Interaction through Design (CHI 2021 Workshop)
Wed 5 May 2021
On Sunday 9 May 2021, a workshop on 'Human-Data Interaction through Design' co-organised by Dr Lachlan D. Urquhart of Edinburgh Law School will take place as part of the annual ACM CHI Virtual Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.
CHI is an event where researchers and practitioners gather from across the world to discuss the latest in interactive technology. CHI is generally considered the most prestigious in the field of HCI and attracts thousands of international attendees annually.
The theme of this year's CHI conference is "Making Waves, Combining Strengths". The event will be held for the first time as an online virtual conference and will run between Saturday 8 - Thursday 13 May 2021.
2021 ACM CHI Virtual Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
Workshop - Human-Data Interaction (HDI) through Design
Sunday 9 May 2021, 13:00 - 17:00 BST
Workshop organisers: Lachlan Urquhart (Edinburgh University), Derek McAuley (Nottingham University), Ian Forrester (BBC Research and Development), Neelima Sailaja (University of Nottingham), Joseph Lindley (Lancaster University).
The aim of the workshop is to map and understand the current research challenges around HDI, and to lay the foundations for a productive research programme for HDI going forward, clarifying its role in the broader HCI zeitgeist, and helping the movement mature so it can be applied effectively to today’s (and tomorrow’s) complex socio-technological challenges.
To participate:
1) Register for at least one day of the conference and choose your workshop.
2) You are invited to submit a two-page position paper. The paper should discuss an example HDI, suggested themes include:
- Describe an example of employing a HDI approach in a research or innovation context;
- Explore why/how HDI could be useful (or how it may fail) in a given context;
- Use examples to offer critique or comment on the three tenets of HDI, exploring whether these are the right (or wrong) concepts to be concerned about, or what their strengths/limitations are.
If you would prefer not to write a ‘paper’ but would still like to attend, please use the application form to describe your interest around HDI’s current challenges and opportunities.
