Edinburgh Law School's Dr Kath Murray has won the prestigious ESRC and SAGE Publishing Outstanding Early Career Impact award.
Dr Kath Murray, who is Research Associate at The Scottish Centre for Crime & Justice Research (SCCJR) was awarded the prize for her policy reforming work in understanding the Scottish police force’s day-to-day application of the stop and search policy.
Dr Murray’s work was conducted as part of her PhD at Edinburgh Law School . It showed that Scotland has exceptionally high levels of stop and search incidents; the majority of which lacked legal authority. Following the publication of her work, the Scottish Parliament passed the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Bill, which included a provision to regulate stop and search powers.
She was awarded the £10,000 prize at an award ceremony in London on 22 June.
Commenting on Kath’s achievements, Professor Richard Sparks of the University of Edinburgh said: “For a doctoral project to have initiated a major public debate on an aspect of police practice and led directly to a change in legislation is unprecedented in my experience.”
The Law School would like to offer its warmest congratulations to Kath on the well deserved recognition of her work.
