Dr Kasey McCall-Smith presents Human Rights Incorporation at SPLG annual conference
Wed 20 January 2021
Dr Kasey McCall-Smith's presentation of 'Human Rights Incorporation in the UK and Scotland' contributed to the first session of pre-recorded panels for the Scottish Public Law Group's annual conference, which was released last week.
The Human Rights Incorporation panel focused on various areas where Scotland was making greater headway in terms of legalising international human rights standards as set out in the UN human rights treaties.
Dr McCall-Smith's presentation first gave an overview of how the broader UK has largely failed to effectively implement the seven UN Human Rights Treaties to which is party. She then explained the current initiatives here in Scotland, with a particular focus on the First Minister’s Advisory Group on Human Rights’ recommendations and the work of the National Taskforce for Human Rights.
The presentation delivered insight gained as both a member of the CYCPS Expert Advisory Panel on UNCRC Incorporation and as a member of the Academic Advisory Panel to the Human Rights Taskforce as well as from her recent project, Incorporating Human Rights in Scotland.
The four panel presentations are publicly available from the Scottish Public Law Group.
