Chancellor’s Fellow (Assistant Professor) in AI, Data, and the Rule of Law, Dr John Zerilli, has been announced as an inaugural AI2050 Early Career Fellow by Schmidt Futures.

Schmidt Futures’ AI2050 programme has allocated up to $4 million to support the Early Career Fellows, with each fellow being eligible to receive up to $300,000 over two years as well as having access to Schmidt Futures global network.

The AI2050 awards are issued to researchers to support ambitious work which tackles the hard problems within AI. The initial working list of hard problems for the AI2050 researchers to take on was developed by drawing on previous work in AI and through conversations with experts.

Dr Zerilli’s research will explore the many ramifications of data for traditional concepts in political and legal theory, especially legitimacy, democracy, rights, and procedural justice.

Dr Zerilli said: "I am thrilled that my work has been recognised in this way. I've long been eager to build a community of early and mid-career scholars working on these problems. The Schmidt fellowship allows me to take the first big step in that direction."
