Dr Francisco Quintana

Dr Francisco J. Quintana, Lecturer in Global Law at Edinburgh Law School, has been appointed Managing Editor of AJIL Unbound.

AJIL Unbound is the online companion to the American Journal of International Law, the flagship journal of the American Society of International Law. It publishes shorter, original essays of international legal scholarship. These essays are written to be accessible to policymakers, practitioners and students, and are free for anyone to read as soon as they are published. It is one of the most widely read international law publications in the world.

Dr Quintana is one of five Managing Editors, working alongside colleagues from universities in Finland, Kenya and the United States. In the role, he develops and edits the journal’s symposia, which bring together a series of essays on a single theme.

Before taking up the appointment, Dr Quintana served as Associate Editor of the European Journal of International Law for three years.

Dr Quintana’s research focuses on the legal foundations of international ordering. Drawing on history, geopolitics, and political economy, he asks how international and transnational law shape the distribution of power and resources across borders, and how they enable or constrain attempts by rising and smaller powers to alter those distributions. His current research examines monetary governance as a site of geoeconomic contest: dollar dominance and de-dollarisation, emergency liquidity, and financial infrastructure.
