Dr Deval Desai was awarded the Best Paper Prize (runner up) for his paper ‘Theorising the anti-fiscal state: evidence from India’ at the Society of Legal Scholars Annual Conference 2023.

He said: "I'm very honoured to have been the runner up for the prestigious Best Paper Prize. This paper is an example of some of the cutting-edge scholarship coming out of the SNSF-funded Reversing the Gaze project, and reflects the exciting work being done by the project team. I’m indebted to the team, the convenors of the Tax Law section at the conference (Stephen Daly and Amy Lawton), and those at Edinburgh and beyond who have discussed endemic government underspending with me over the last few years."

Papers were nominated by convenors of the subject sections and judged by a panel consisting of Lucy Vickers (President), Rachael Walsh (representing Legal Studies), and Nicola Wake (Honorary Subject Sections Secretary).
