Tue 7 November 2023
Dr Deval Desai was awarded the 2023 Chancellor’s Award for Rising Star. The Chancellor’s Awards, presented by the Chancellor HRH The Princess Royal, are one of the University’s highest honours for its community.
Dr Desai was recognised for establishing a reputation for creative, interdisciplinary, and excellent scholarship that builds on Global South experiences. He was also honoured for his success in securing and delivering on research funding, translating research into impact, and being a strong mentor and leader.
He said: “It is a privilege to receive this award. It reflects how Edinburgh Law School nurtures its early career scholars and gives them a world-class platform to conduct research and to collaborate beyond silos. The School, and the University more broadly, has welcomed me, my teams, and my research, as we draw on Global South experiences to provide globally-relevant theory and practical insight.”
Dr Desai researches the interplay between law, regulation, and states in the Global South to better understand how states respond to today’s complex crises; his work is interdisciplinary and brings Global South experiences to the centre of global debates. Dr Desai has also been elected to the Young Academy of Scotland and the Royal Society of Arts in recognition of his research.
The Chancellor’s Awards were established in 2003. They reward staff in four categories for teaching, research, outstanding contribution, and showing great potential in early-career teaching and/or research. This year, four University staff members were honoured.
