Dr McMillan hold the RSE medal

Dr Catriona (Katy) McMillan, Lecturer in Medical Law and Ethics at Edinburgh Law School, has been awarded the prestigious Dame Muriel Spark Medal by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The award recognises exceptional contributions in the arts, humanities, and social sciences by early career researchers.

Dr McMillan was honoured for her pioneering work on the legal and ethical implications of ‘femtech’—technology designed to support women’s health and wellbeing. Her interdisciplinary research bridges academic insight and public interest, positioning her as an innovative leader in a fast-growing field.

Dr McMillan said: It is a profound honour to be awarded the RSE Dame Muriel Spark Medal, named after an exceptional author whose unique exploration of independence and individualism in women, often in an accessible and light-hearted way, has had a lasting impact on so many. I am also immensely grateful for the support of my colleagues at Edinburgh Law School and beyond, without whom this achievement would not have been possible.”

The medal was presented at a ceremony hosted by the RSE on 19 November, where 11 outstanding individuals were recognised across academic disciplines. Medals were presented by Professor Anne Anderson, RSE Vice-President of Research, with citations read by Professor Dr Alison Hulme FRSE.

Professor Anne Anderson commented: “The RSE’s prestigious medals, which are nominated by RSE Fellows, are awarded to recognise truly outstanding accomplishments. Representing a range of fields, this year’s medallists join a remarkable group of pioneers whose work advances our knowledge and helps to improve lives all over the world. Their achievements highlight the depth and breadth of Scotland’s research talent. I congratulate them all.”
