Dr Anna Souhami shortlisted for College of Humanities and Social Sciences Staff Recognition Award

Tue 30 September 2014

Dr Anna Souhami has been shortlisted for a College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) Staff Recognition Awards, which have been established to honour outstanding contributions by staff employed within CHSS. Dr Souhami has been shortlisted for her redesign of Ordinary criminology provision in the School of Law. The criminology student body is unusual in CHSS not just in its size (over 300 students in each criminology course) but its diversity: the majority of students (approximately 80%) are drawn outwith the Law School, from a diverse range of Schools across CHSS and the wider University. Students have a wide range of academic, cultural and professional backgrounds and are at different stages of their academic career.  As a result, meeting the needs of the student cohort is not only particularly challenging for criminology provision, but because of its reach has the potential to impact on student experience and the reputation of the School across the University.

Dr Souhami has redesigned every element of the courses (including learning outcomes, delivery of lectures and tutorials, assessments and examining processes) and created two new courses, Introduction to Criminology and Introduction to Criminal Justice. The courses are designed to develop academic skills which transfer across student degrees,  and foster academic communities among a diverse student population.  In particular, teaching emphasises the development of independent, critical thinking and encourages students to become protagonists in political debate. The courses are supported by a specifically designed programme of continued training for PhD tutors which aims to develop excellence in teaching by enabling students to become reflective, skilled practitioners, thus enhancing students’ employability and integrating them into wider university life.
