Supporting Student Success Through Alumni and Partner Scholarships

Our students’ achievements are made possible, in part, by the generosity of alumni and external partners, including organisations on the Career Opportunities Programme, who fund scholarships each year. These awards provide crucial financial support, helping students at all levels - from undergraduate to PhD and Diploma - to focus on their studies and pursue their goals without the stress of financial constraints.

Beyond financial assistance, these scholarships recognise excellence, dedication, and potential. For many students, receiving such an award is a powerful affirmation of their hard work and a source of motivation to continue striving for success. Alumni donors often give in gratitude for the opportunities they received as students, while professional partners invest in the next generation.

Alexsandra says This work placement enabled me to develop essential legal skills in advance of my training contract with the firm in 2027. Making new connections ahead of my training contract was extremely motivating and had me looking forward to starting my career at CMS. The Career Development Scholarship helped me immensely in reducing barriers to my involvement with the programme. I am now immeasurably eager to step into the next chapter of my legal career.

My informal discussions with the participants of the course have been informative to understand their own work in relation to the protection of civilians and their reaction regarding the content of the course itself. More importantly, these discussions shed light on the different approaches towards civilian harm mitigation and POC...the Protection of Civilians Course was fundamental to push my research further, and the scholarships made my attendance possible.

As I joined delegates, civil society groups and experts in Geneva, I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand a major part of ‘live’ international environmental lawmaking in real time. What I could only have imagined at the beginning of my studies at Edinburgh to be an intangible, academic interest was transformed into a lived experience – made possible by the generous support of the Ewen Cameron Travel and Summer School Scholarship at Edinburgh Law School.

As a young researcher, it was inspiring to meet researchers who are further along in their careers and could share their advice for opportunities. Attending the RLI Conference gave me the opportunity to meet academics and learn about new research in the fields of Refugee Law and Forced Migration Studies. Being surrounded by likeminded people at the RLI Conference confirmed my passion for this field and my desire to pursue further research opportunities.

Over the course of 28 hours, which represented a highly accurate portrayal of the pressure and urgency we will encounter in our future careers in international relations, we deployed our knowledge of international law gained at the Edinburgh Law School, but also sharpened our practical skills. We had the opportunity to exchange perspectives with other international law enthusiasts from all over the world, broadening our horizons and enriching our understanding of international law and relations.

I had the privilege of working directly with an associate and a partner of the firm. My tasks mostly consisted of doing legal research in the area of corporate law generally, drafting legal documents, and reviewing commercial contracts and judgments. Doing so enabled me to gain knowledge of how corporate law firms operate and learn the fundamentals of German corporate law. The summer school has challenged my ideas and understanding of law and its role as a tool in public interest dispute resolution and advocacy. The speakers also critically engaged with what we understand as the role of legal professionals in this regard and how we can improve how we measure impact. These lessons have been transformative for my understanding of the field and how I would like to approach working in the NGO and development sector.

this experience was incredibly intellectually stimulating, and has helped me more precisely contextualize the role of international criminal justice in the ecosystem of public international law and human rights. This brigade was an eye-opening and transformative experience that enriched my understanding of the complex humanitarian challenges faced by refugees in Greece. The multidisciplinary approach of Global Brigades allowed me to develop leadership skills and practical knowledge across legal, medical and business domains, preparing me to lead future brigades effectively. It provided a meaningful opportunity to contribute directly to a vulnerable community, strengthening my commitment to global service and social

I found the summer school intellectually enlightening. It was fascinating to learn about the history and development about different private law systems, and how they interact with each other. Outside academics, I found the Summer School a valuable opportunity for other reasons. The summer school enhanced my cultural horizons, as I met and made friends from various countries around Europe, such as Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Finland, Greece and many more.

My experience was absolutely incredible; there were 22 participants in the course from 21 different countries. Each participant was very distinguished and specialised in their respective fields so hearing their insights and inputs to discussions throughout the course was invaluable in terms of learning. Having such an interdisciplinary and multi-cultural approach was particularly interesting when it came to the latter days of the course when there was a ‘mock negotiation’

The lessons and skills gained from the Jessup Competition will continue to influence our academic and professional journeys. The rigorous preparation process fostered resilience, adaptability, and the ability to work collaboratively under pressure, which are qualities that are indispensable in legal practice. The impact of these awards extends far beyond their time at university, fostering opportunities both personal and professional growth.
