Jorge Martínez Rivera

Jorge Martínez Rivera, a PhD student from Chile, has been appointed as Senior International Fellow at Government Accountability Project (GAP). In 2022 Edinburgh Law School awarded Jorge the Career Development Scholarship to intern at GAP headquarters in Washington, DC.

The Career Development Scholarships assists current Edinburgh Law School students in achieving their career goals, reflecting the School’s commitment to enhancing opportunities for its students to reach their potential.

The scholarship provides a bursary of up to £2000 to successful applicants to support the costs of pursuing a career development opportunity such as an internship, work placement or fellowship within an organisation. Edinburgh Law School is able to provide this scholarship due to the generous gifts and legacies from alumni. Applications to this year’s Career Development Scholarship will open in April.

During his time interning at GAP, Jorge worked under the supervision of the prestigious lawyer and activist for the rights of whistleblowers, Tom Devine.

GAP is an NGO founded in 1977 and recognised as the world leader in whistleblowing litigation and advocacy; it has represented over 7,000 whistleblowers. Among its clients is Edward Snowden, who disclosed abuses of power by the U.S. government.

Jorge is currently researching the legal transplant of Anglo-American whistleblowing to countries of the civil law tradition, focusing on the case of Chile, under the supervision of Professor David Cabrelli.
