Call for volunteer judges: UK Student Mediation Competition

Edinburgh Law School is honoured to be hosting the UK Student Mediation Competition on Saturday 27 January 2024. The competition involves students from across the UK, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The competition has been running since 2008 and is designed to help law students understand the value of resolving disputes through mediation, develop their mediation skills and techniques, and to better understand the mediation process in general. The total number of participating teams is yet to be confirmed, however the 2022/23 competition involved 18 teams from different UK Universities. The Competition is therefore also a fantastic networking and social opportunity for the students and professionals involved.

We are looking to appoint volunteer Judges with relevant skills to judge the competition. We aim to have three Judges on each panel and so can accommodate differing levels of experience. Being an experienced mediator is not a prerequisite and we would equally welcome interest from those who have some knowledge of mediation and are keen to participate under the guidance of more experienced Judges.  

In advance of the competition Judges will be provided with a complete set of information (including the competition schedule, rules, score sheets and criteria and mediation scenarios). A Judges’ briefing will also take place on the morning of the competition.

Whilst the schedule for the day is yet to be finalised, the competition is a full-day event. It is expected that Judges will be required from approximately 9am with the competition finishing around 4pm. The Judges’ panel will then complete scoring, which we anticipate will be complete by 6pm. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including lunch. Judges are also welcome to attend the evening dinner reception and awards ceremony if they are able to do so.

This is set to be an interesting and rewarding student event and we are thrilled to be hosting it at Edinburgh Law School.
