Biodiversity Convention head Braulio Dias to speak in Edinburgh

On 10 June 2014, Dr Braulio Dias (Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity) will speak at the University of Edinburgh on the evolution of the international biodiversity regime.

The event is organised and will be chaired by Dr Elisa Morgera, under the aegis of the Global Environment and Society Academy and with support from the Law School. A podcast of the event will be made available in due course, thanks to the generous contribution of the Scottish Centre for International Law.

The event will be held from 9-11am in the Playfair Library. Dr Dias will deliver a key-note speech on the evolution of the international biodiversity regime and its future directions. This will be followed by an academic-practitioner panel discussion. Panelists include: Ian Jardine, Chief Executive of the Scottish Natural Heritage, Dr Janet Fisher, Edinburgh School of Geosciences (expert in ecosystem services) and Dr Meriwether Wilson, Edinburgh School of Geosciences (expert in marine science and policy), as well as Dr Morgera. Ample time will then be devoted to questions from the audience.

Dr Braulio Dias obtained his PhD in Zoology from the University of Edinburgh in 1981. He took office as Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2011.

Dr Elisa Morgera is Director of the LLM programme in Global Environment and Climate Change Law.
