BBC Radio 4 interviews Arianna Andreangeli on abolition of mobile roaming charges

Mon 2 May 2016

Dr Arianna Andreangeli spoke to BBC Radio 4's 'Money Box' programme on Saturday on the issue of the abolition of mobile roaming charges in the EC.

Speaking to anchor Paul Lewis, Dr Andreangeli stated that the new rules aren't simply a case of 'blatant state regulation on price', but that the European Commission's (EC) plans to create a 'digital single market' - an area without any borders where services can be supplied and received without discrimination - will allow for barriers created by these additional charges for roaming to be ended next year, and addresses how consumers are prevented from enjoying digital services within the EC with confidence.

She went on to explain that the overall price consumers may be charged to compensate providers for the loss of revenue from these charges, will need to take into account that current business models for telecommunications are much leaner in regard to the technologies used to provide services.

Dr Andreangeli also responded to questions about the effects of the changes on the UK should there be a Brexit outcome in the forthcoming EU referendum.
