Attorney General of Bhutan visits the Law School for Alumni event

Edinburgh Law School were delighted to host Lungten Dubgyur, the Attorney General of Bhutan recently for an Alumni Perspectives event.

During the event, Mr Dubgyur discussed his life after graduating from Edinburgh Law School in 2001 and his career path from Trainee Legal Officer to Attorney General.

In 1995, Mr Dubgyur joined the Judiciary as a Trainee Legal Officer in the High Court. He was amongst the first group of legal professionals to undergo the Post Graduate Diploma in National (Bhutanese) Law. He served as a Justice of the High Court of Bhutan and demitted the Office in May 2020, after the completion of his ten-year tenure. He was appointed as the new Attorney General of Bhutan under the Hand and Seal of His Majesty the King on 20 July 2020.

Mr Dubgyur has also carried out numerous legal research and writings, and has been a guest lecturer at Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Institute of Language and Cultural Studies in Taktsi, and the Royal Thimphu College in Thimphu.

After the Alumni Perspectives event, Mr Dubgyur kindly gifted a signed copy of his book “The Wheel of Laws: An insight into the origin of Buddhist Kingship, Constitution, Judicial Independence and Constitutional cases in Bhutan” to the Law Library. The book explores Bhutanese laws as well as constitutional and democratic changes that have taken place over the past decade.
