Andrew Farrer quizzes the public's Euro knowledge

Wed 11 June 2014

Andrew Farrer was recently asked by the Edinburgh Evening News to develop a quiz testing the public's knowledge of the EU and all things European. The quiz, published in the Edinburgh Evening News on the day of the European Parliamentary elections, was developed as a light-hearted test reflecting the perceived lack of enthusiasm by the Scottish public to European elections, as indeed seemed to be the case by the low turn out of voters to May's elections.

Speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News, Andrew said;

“We are separated geographically by a bit of Channel and that seems to have formed a mental barrier in terms of whether we see ourselves as part of Europe and how much we know about Europe.

“That’s changing. Travel is having a big impact, especially among younger people – my students tend to be more pro-Europe, very few come in seeing the European Union as something we should get out of. However, my feeling, not based on any scientific evidence, is that most people don’t know that much about Europe.”

You can test your knowledge on Europe by taking Andrew's quiz here.
