Tell us a little bit about your life/background before Edinburgh Law School
I am from London Ontario. I finished my last year of high school in Switzerland, at Neuchatel Junior College, and went straight from high school to Edinburgh. I was always a more internationally minded person, so going abroad to university was a natural fit for me.
What did you study at Edinburgh Law School, and why did you choose the programme?
I studied Law and French because I knew that being able to speak French as a lawyer in Canada is an asset. Further, it enabled me to do a year abroad in Paris, where I really sharpened my French.
What do you think is unique to the Edinburgh Law School experience, and what are some of your favourite memories?
The Edinburgh Law School experience is unique because it takes place in one of the most incredible cities, Edinburgh. It is such an inviting and walkable city, there is never a dull moment, and it is very easy to meet up with your classmates. The School has a great gym, the city has tons to offer, and weekend get-aways are cheap and cheery.
What have you been up to since graduating/what are you doing after graduation (e.g., your professional or further academic pursuits since leaving Edinburgh Law School) and how have your degree studies with us helped you in this?
After Edinburgh, I did my Masters of Law and Finance at the University of Frankfurt. I then wrote my transition exams, wrote the Ontario Bar, and worked at a mid-sized law firm for 5 years. I now work in-house for a large Canadian company, as their French and English bilingual counsel.
What advice would you give current Edinburgh Law School students?
For those who are looking to become a lawyer in Canada once done, I would encourage all to go to Edinburgh. However, do understand it will not be a straightforward jump, as if one went to law school in Canada. You will need to write transition exams, hustle a bit more, and to educate employers about University of Edinburgh, and the reputation that follows from that. It is hard work, but all very doable.
On a lighter note, I picked up a phrase while in Germany: "Das Studentenleben ist das beste Leben”- “The student life, is the best life.” So enjoy every moment.
